Call Me Moth: The Margaret Moth Story

CAUSE: Empowering Women & Girls

CATEGORY: Film

PROJECT DIRECTOR: Beth Portello

Call Me Moth: The Margaret Moth Story is a documentary film telling the life story of CNN camerawoman Margaret Moth, one of the first western journalists to arrive in war-torn Sarajevo in April 1992. In July 1992, Margaret was shot in the face by a Serbian sniper, surviving the life-threatening injury by holding her jaw in place. Joe Duran, her closest friend, and fellow cameraman rushed to her side.

Months later, disfigured, speech-impaired, and infected with hepatitis, Margaret returned to Bosnia to continue reporting. While the wound did change her, it never stopped her from covering wars for another 15 years with Joe often joining her in hot zones. Cancer claimed Margaret in 2010. As the 25th anniversary of the Bosnian Peace Treaty nears in October--and a time when journalism is under attack globally-- Joe plans his return to the city to track down the sniper that shot Margaret.
