Lico Jiménez: The Ebony Liszt

CAUSE: Racial Justice

CATEGORY: Film

PROJECT DIRECTOR: Isidro L. Betancourt Benítez

Lico Jiménez, The Ebony LIszt is an inspiring documentary feature film currently in production. It celebrates child prodigy pianist and composer José Manuel "Lico" Jiménez Berroa (1851-1917), known as the "Father of Cuban Lieder". German Lied refers to a song performed in German by a solo singer with piano accompaniment. But since Lico was born in Trinidad de Cuba, studied and performed in Europe, he brought the elements of Lied back to Cuba where he composed in Spanish. But since the enslavement of people was not outlawed until 1886 in Cuba, and since Cienfuegos and Trinidad were major ports for the sugar, rum and slave trade, Lico was only allowed to teach from his home. The story is told through the eyes of his European, North American and Cuban descendants as they return to his homeland in 2022 and unite for the first time. The film explores the rich accomplishments of the first trio of Cuban classical musicians of African descent that toured Europe in the 1800's during an era when there were still 800,000 enslaved Africans in Cuba.
